High Productive CNC Spring Machine Small: Cam vs Camless Buying Guide

When a spring factory floor manager asks me whether to buy a cam spring machine or a camless one, my answer is always the same: it depends on what you are making and how often you change tools. After 20+ years in the spring machinery business and watching 150+ sets shipped outside China to 15+ countries, I have seen both technologies win and lose in different scenarios. This guide breaks down the real engineering differences, the spec numbers that actually matter, and when each machine earns its place on your production floor.

Why the Cam vs Camless Question Matters More Than You Think

A cam spring machine uses mechanical cams to control the feeding, cutting, and pitch of each spring. A camless (also called CNC servo) spring machine uses independent servo motors for every axis, controlled purely by software. The difference is not just price, it is flexibility, setup time, and the complexity of the springs you can produce.

If you are running the same spring design for months, a cam machine is faster, more rigid, and often more accurate on long production runs. If you are producing short batches of special-shaped springs, torsion springs with complex legs, or music wire springs with tight tolerances, a camless machine saves hours of mechanical cam changing.

Dongzheng Spring Machine Product Line at a Glance

Dongzheng has been building spring machinery in Dongguan since 2004. The full CNC lineup covers wire diameters from 0.08mm to 6.0mm, which is roughly the entire range a general spring factory will ever need.

The flagship HSM-CNC20 covers 0.2 to 2.0mm wire diameter, and over 100 units of this model are now running in factories worldwide. It is the benchmark most buyers compare against.

What the Spec Sheet Does Not Tell You

Wire diameter range is the first number everyone looks at, but it is rarely the deciding factor. Here are the parameters that actually affect your daily output:

  • Axis count: Most cam machines in this class run 2 to 3 axes. The HSM-CNC1025 camless wire bending machine adds more servo axes, which is what allows it to handle computer cnc wire bending machine for special-shaped spring product work without manual cam swaps.

  • Pitch accuracy: For music wire springs, which are often used in musical instrument mechanisms and precision instruments, pitch consistency is critical. A cam machine running music wire needs properly ground cams. A camless machine running music wire needs tight servo tuning. Dongzheng's HSM-CNC1025 and HSM-CNC1045 are both configured for stable music wire processing.

  • Production speed: Cam machines typically win on raw strokes per minute because there is no servo lag. For a high productive cnc spring machine small setup, the HSM-CNC08 cam coiler is hard to beat in the sub-1mm range.

  • Setup time: This is where camless wins. Changing from a cylindrical compression spring to a conical torsion spring can take 30 minutes on a cam machine and under 5 minutes on a camless unit with stored programs.

Real Factory Data from Three Markets

Vietnam (long-term customer since 2010): Running the HSM-CNC20, this factory reported a 35% daily output increase within 8 months of installation. Pitch accuracy stayed at ±0.01mm consistently across months of two-shift operation. They now operate over 40 units of Dongzheng machines in Vietnam.

Brazil (2022 buyer): A spring supplier purchased 2 units of HSM-CNC20. They were added to the Dongzheng WeChat service group at delivery. As of today, that service group has never been used for a repair request, because both machines have run without a single service incident. Brazil now runs 10+ Dongzheng units.

Shenzhen (2026 buyer): A new customer ordered 2 HSM-CNC20 units plus one HSM-CNC08 compression spring machine. The setup technician assigned to commission the line had previously worked at multiple spring factories running machines from various brands. His unsolicited feedback after commissioning: stable, durable, easy to set up. That kind of frontline endorsement matters more than any brochure.

Vietnam repeat buyer (March 2026): A factory already running another brand's spring machine saw Dongzheng equipment in a neighboring plant. They compared spring samples and immediately noticed the difference in consistency. Within weeks they ordered one HSM-CNC20 to expand capacity.

When to Choose Cam, When to Choose Camless

Here is a simple rule of thumb from years of watching buyers make this decision:

  • Pick a cam machine (HSM-CNC20, HSM-CNC40, HSM-CNC60) if your production runs are long, your spring shapes are simple to medium complexity, and your priority is maximum strokes per minute and lowest cost per part.

  • Pick a camless machine (HSM-CNC1008, HSM-CNC1025, HSM-CNC1045) if you make 10+ different spring designs per month, if your products include torsion springs or complex wire forms, or if you need a computer cnc wire bending machine for special-shaped spring product flexibility.

  • For music wire springs specifically, the camless HSM-CNC1025 is a wire making machine for music wire springs that handles the material's springback better when the servo parameters are properly tuned.

The Question I Ask Every Buyer Before Quoting

Before recommending any machine, I always ask three things: what is your thinnest and thickest wire, how many part numbers do you run per month, and what tolerance does your end customer audit against. The answers almost always point to one or two specific models, and the conversation becomes much shorter from there.
