The Evolution of Axis Control in CNC Spring Machines: From 2-Axis to 12-Axis Wire Forming

If you have ever stood next to a CNC spring machine and watched it cycle through a complex torsion spring program in under a second, you have probably asked yourself: how many axes do I truly require to form the parts my factory needs? This is one of the most practical questions a procurement engineer or production manager will face, and the answer has shifted dramatically over the past fifteen years.

At Dongzheng Spring Machine, we have been building wire forming equipment in Dongguan since 2004. Across more than 150 CNC units shipped outside China, into factories of varying automation requirements, we have seen exactly where axis count starts to matter, and more importantly, where it does not.

What Axis Count Actually Controls in a CNC Spring Machine

Before discussing numbers, clarify what each axis does. In a typical camless spring machine, axes correspond to three categories: wire feed axes (controlling how the linear spring advances along the Z direction), quill or rotation axes (controlling coiling and torsion), and tool axes (controlling bending, cutting, and forming tools around the wire).

A 2-axis setup handles feed and a single forming axis. It is suitable for simple compression springs where the geometry repeats and tooling is simpler. As you add camlation, sliding coaxial, and wire rotation capabilities, you unlock the ability to form 3D wire shapes, torsion legs, and complex hooks without manual secondary operations.

The table below summarizes where each tier of our HSM-CNC series sits on this spectrum:

Why More Axes Is Not Always the Answer

In our experience serving factories across 15+ markets including Vietnam (40+ units installed), Brazil (10+ units), Indonesia and South Korea (5+ units each), the question we hear most is: should I buy a 12-axis machine to future-proof my workshop?

The honest answer is that additional axes only deliver ROI when three challenges become present:

  • Part complexity: 3D bends, multiple radii, off-plane hooks

  • Material cost: Hard non-ferrous alloys that cannot tolerate manual secondary forming

  • Production volume: Programs cycle so frequently that program-level continuity matters more than axis count

A factory running 50,000 identical compression springs per month will see no benefit from upgrading beyond 3-axis configuration. A factory producing five different torsion spring SKUs daily will benefit from it.

Real Production Data from a Vietnamese Workshop

One of our Vietnamese customers has been running an HSM-CNC20 since 2010. The machine operates with cam-type configuration in the 0.2-2.0 mm wire diameter range. After eight months of operation on their line, daily output increased by 35 percent compared to their previous mechanical setup. Spring free length tolerance held at ±0.01 mm continuously across shifts.

This is meaningful data because the upgrade was simple. They did not need 12 axes. They needed repeatability from a well-aligned cam system.

When Camless Configuration Becomes the Right Choice

Camless spring machines trade mechanical cams for independently controlled tool slides. The benefit shows up in three areas:

  • Setup time: Program-level changes without cam swapping, which can cut setup by 50 percent when running small batches

  • Geometry access: Wire-form shapes impossible to produce with cam-style forming, especially when wire rotation is required

  • Tooling inventory: Reduced tooling requirements for low-volume specialty parts

Our HSM-CNC1008 and HSM-CNC1025 are positioned for factories producing electronics springs, medical micro-springs, and precision wire forms where program-level tolerances are highly valued. For factories needing two-seater motorcycle seat frames or bicycle component forming, the high-quality wire forming machine for bicycle parts requires the stability of a cam-type system in the HSM-CNC20 or HSM-CNC30 range.

For leaf spring and heavy-duty applications, axis count matters less than frame rigidity and hydraulic control. A wear-resistant hydraulic bending machine for leaf springs needs servo-controlled hydraulic pressure regulation to handle consistent line thickness well.

What We Recommend Before Buying

Before committing to a specific axis configuration, ask the factory team these three questions:

  • What is the maximum diameter of any wire, and how do you handle tool wear on larger diameters?

  • How many SKUs run on the machine per week, and how frequently do you program-level switch?

  • What tolerance is required, and what is your current variation?

If the answers point toward 20+ SKUs per week with tolerance requirements below ±0.02 mm, a camless CNC spring machine is increasingly likely to be the better option. If the answers point toward 5 SKUs per week with tolerance requirements of ±0.05 mm, a cam-type CNC spring machine will deliver more value per dollar invested.

The right axis count is the one that produces your parts reliably for the lowest program-level friction. Not the highest number on a specification sheet.

What axis configuration does your current production line run, and where have you noticed the friction points slowing down changeovers? I would be curious to hear how factories in your region are approaching this trade-off.
