3/4/5 Axis Helical Spring Machine: Choosing the Right Configuration for Your Production

If you are evaluating a 3/4/5 axis helical spring machine, the configuration you pick will shape your daily output, your tooling budget, and how often your operator fights the machine. Most buyers focus on wire diameter range and forget that axis count quietly determines what geometries are actually producible in one setup. After 20+ years on the shop floor and over 150 machines running outside China, here is how I would frame the decision.


Why Axis Count Matters More Than People Think


A 2-axis machine can make a basic compression spring. The moment you need an off-center hook, a torsion leg with a custom pitch, or a wire-rotation feature on the coiling point, you need a third, fourth, or fifth axis. We see buyers in Vietnam and Brazil routinely under-spec their first machine, then come back within 18 months for a higher-axis unit.


For a good rigidity spring forming machine for compression spring, the axis layout must keep the forming forces aligned with the slide rails, not off-axis where vibration lives. That is where many "value" machines fail after 6-12 months.

What Buyers Actually Report


A Vietnamese customer running two HSM-CNC20 units since 2010 logged a 35% daily output uplift within 8 months of switching from their previous European brand, with precision holding at ±0.01 mm through three-shift operation. A Brazilian buyer in 2022 purchased two units and, as of last contact, has never opened a WeChat service ticket - no repairs needed.


More telling: a Shenzhen customer in 2026 bought two HSM-CNC20 plus an HSM-CNC08. Their setup technician, who has worked with machines from multiple brands across different factories, specifically requested Dongzheng and keeps praising the rigidity and ease of tuning. Another Vietnamese customer in March 2026 saw our machine running in a competitor's factory, noticed the stability difference against his existing equipment, and ordered an HSM-CNC20 the same week.


Cam vs Camless: The Real Trade-Off


Cam machines win on rigidity and price per axis. They are the good rigidity spring forming machine for compression spring work where geometry is straightforward. Camless machines win on flexibility - you can run 50+ SKUs without changing cams, and setup time drops by roughly 40-50% once your operator learns the Windows-based HMI.


If your wire bending equipment video shows parts with compound bends, hooks in multiple planes, or asymmetric pitch, you need camless. If it shows clean coils with simple end conditions, cam is the better buy.


Practical Sizing Rule


Take your largest wire diameter, add 0.5 mm headroom, and match to the machine's mid-range, not its maximum. Running a 6 mm spring on an HSM-CNC60 rated at 6.0 mm sounds safe but leaves no torque reserve for harder materials. Running the same spring on an HSM-CNC40 at the top of its range is a recipe for servo alarms.


For wire diameter under 1.0 mm with medical or electronics tolerances, the HSM-CNC1008 or HSM-CNC1025 camless platforms are the right starting point. Between 1.8 mm and 4.5 mm with rotation requirements, the HSM-CNC1045 is currently the only machine in our line that combines that wire range with a rotary axis in a camless architecture.


A Note on Service Geography
