If you run a spring production line, you have probably noticed how often the terms "cam" and "camless" get thrown around without much technical context. After working with manufacturers across Vietnam, Brazil, Indonesia, and Korea, the question I hear most is not "which is better" but rather "which architecture fits my part mix and wire diameter." Let me walk through what actually changes between a precision 8 slide wire forming machine for special-shaped spring product and a 3/4/5 axis helical spring machine, using real machine specs and field data.
Two Machine Families, Two Design Philosophies
CNC cam spring machines use mechanical cam discs to drive each tooling slide. The movements are programmed by adjusting the cam profile, which makes them extremely fast and repeatable for high-volume runs. CNC camless spring machines replace those cam discs with servo-driven axes. Each tooling slide is controlled independently through software, which gives you far more flexibility for complex or short-run production.

Single part number, high volume, stable geometry, wire under 6mm: HSM-CNC20, HSM-CNC30, or HSM-CNC40 cam series.
Multiple part numbers, frequent changeovers, prototype work, or complex torsion and wire-rotation requirements: HSM-CNC1008, HSM-CNC1025, or HSM-CNC1045 camless series.
Ultra-fine wire under 1mm, medical or electronic micro-springs: HSM-CNC08 or HSM-CNC1008.
